Microsoft has announced that support for SQL Server 2008 will be withdrawn in 2019, to be followed shortly after by Windows 2008.  They warn that this could mean increased vulnerability to cyber attacks and raises compliance issues, especially relating to the new European Union Data Protection regulations – see more here. Microsoft’s preferred solution is to migrate the whole environment onto a cloud-based Azure Managed Instance (which is not yet available), and later to upgrade to the latest SQL Server version 2017.
